What is LTE?
Long-Term Evolution (LTE) is a standard for wireless broadband communication for mobile devices and data terminals, based on the GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA technologies. The standard is developed by the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) and is intended to be the upgrade path for carriers with both GSM/UMTS networks and CDMA2000 networks.
The following are the advanced requirements for LTE according to 3GPP:
Reduced cost per bit
Increased service provisioning
Flexibility of use of existing and new frequency bands
Simplified architecture, Open interfaces
Allow for reasonable terminal power consumption
